Chiron
Chiron
Astronomy
Chiron was discovered in 1977 by astronomer C. Koala.
It is classified as a centaur – an object that moves between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus. Its orbit lasts about 50 years, so it stays in each sign for an average of about 4-8 years (because it moves irregularly, sometimes even longer in one sign).
Mythological Origins
In Greek mythology, Chiron was a centaur – half-man, half-horse.
Unlike other wild and unrestrained centaurs, Chiron was:
wise, noble and just, Teacher of many heroes (Achilles, Asclepius, Heracles, Jason). Legend has it that he was accidentally wounded by a poisoned arrow from Heracles. As an immortal, Chiron could not die, but the pain was eternal and incurable.
In the end, he gave up his immortality and surrendered it to Prometheus, thus finding liberation. That is why Chiron carries the archetype of the wounded healer – one who cannot fully heal himself, but through his own wound learns how to heal others.
Chiron in astrology
Key symbolism
Personal wound – the place in the horoscope where we feel pain, hurt, rejection.
Healing – through facing that wound, we develop wisdom and compassion. Teacher and Guide – Chiron shows where we become guides to others through the experience of our own pain.
Paradox – the wound never completely disappears, but through it we reach the greatest strength. How to interpret Chiron?
Sign – describes the nature of the wound (eg Chiron in Aries → identity wound; in Virgo → wound through a sense of imperfection).
House – shows the area of life where the wound manifests (eg in the 7th house → wound in relationships, partnerships).
Aspects – Planets touching Chiron show where and how the wound was activated and how it can be healed.
The Jungian dimension of Chiron
In Jungian psychology, Chiron represents the process of individuation through pain:
Shadow – the wound is often repressed, but it constantly acts from the unconscious.
An alchemical process – through facing oneself, the wound turns into gold – into compassion, wisdom and the ability to help others.
The archetype of the healer – the person becomes a guide to others because he knows what it’s like to go through suffering. Chiron is therefore the place where we are most vulnerable, but also where we can become the most authentic and wisest.
