Moon Phases from a Jungian Perspective

Moon Phases from a Jungian Perspective

In astrology, the Moon represents the unconscious part of the psyche: emotional patterns, instinctive reactions, inner rhythms and the relationship to the past. The sun symbolizes the ego and conscious identity. Their mutual relationship through the phases of the Moon shows the way in which the individual experiences the dynamic between consciousness and the unconscious.

From a Jungian perspective, the phases of the moon can be interpreted as cyclical archetypal patterns. They show how the ego enters into a dialogue with the unconscious, how conflicts are created and resolved, and how the process of individuation takes place. Each phase carries a specific form of that relationship and determines the psychological task of the person born in that phase.

  1. New Moon
Sun and Moon in conjunction. Unconscious and conscious merged; the boundaries between the ego and the inner world are not clear. People born in this phase have a strong need for new beginnings, but they often project their inner contents onto the outside world. Jungian: it is the stage of undifferentiation; individuation requires a gradual separation of the ego from collective images and the development of self-observation.
  1. Waxing Crescent
The first part of the Moon becomes visible after dark. The ego begins to separate from the unconscious; a sense of personal mission and task emerges. People born in this phase have a sense of building something new, often developing a strong sense of will. Jungian: this is the beginning of individuation through the development of individuality and differentiation from the collective unconscious.
  1. First Quarter
Sun and Moon squared. The conflict between the conscious and the unconscious becomes apparent. People born in this phase are prone to internal tensions, a sense of struggle and proving themselves. Jungian: the stage of differentiation, where the ego builds structure through confrontation with unconscious contents and the development of internal discipline.
  1. Waxing Gibbous
Moon almost full, energy accumulates. The process of perfecting and preparing for the Full Moon. People born in this phase strive for perfectionism and look for a form that will fully express their inner dynamics. Jungian: the stage in which the ego learns to be patient and work on the integration of unconscious contents through the conscious shaping of goals.
  1. Full Moon
    Sun and Moon in opposition.
The unconscious illuminated in stark contrast to the conscious.
People born in this phase often live in strong polarities, relationships and projections play a key role. Jungian: this is an encounter with the Shadow; the need to integrate projections and consciously work on accepting one’s own unconscious aspects.
  1. Waning Gibbous
The moon is waning after full.
The process of introspective work and evaluation. People born in this phase have a need to understand and convey experiences, often possessing the role of teacher or counselor. Jungian: the assimilation phase, where the ego transforms experience into knowledge and guides the process of internal synthesis.
  1. Last Quarter / Third Quarter
Another square between the Sun and the Moon. Energy recedes, inner self-examination emphasized. People born in this phase often feel distanced from the past and the need to build a new meaning. Jungian: phase of introspection and self-criticism; the ego tries to overcome outdated patterns and integrate what has been experienced into a wider consciousness.
  1. Balsamic Moon (Waning Crescent / Balsamic Moon)
The moon is almost invisible, just before the new cycle. Ending, letting go and preparing for a new beginning.

People born in this phase often carry the feeling of closing a big cycle; they are introspective, oriented towards internal processes and often have a strong intuition.
Jungian: this is contact with the collective unconscious; the phase in which the ego lets go of identifications and prepares for a new phase of individuation.
